Calrossy LOTE (Language Other Than English)
Japanese is available as an elective course of either 100
or 200 hours in Years 9 and 10 or as a 2 unit HSC subject
in Years 11 and 12.
The aim of LOTE study at Calrossy in Years 7-12 is to enable
students to strive towards personal excellence in their target
language( i.e., French and/or Japanese). All students are
encouraged to pursue strategies appropriate to their ability
in order to make meaning in a widening range of relevant language
situations. Wherever possible, student involvement in planning
of the learning process is the key to successful implementation
of the various LOTE documents in French and Japanese. Syllabus
materials stress the student-centered approach to effective
learning of languages. To this end, Calrossy staff encourage
students to be adaptable, creative, inventive and independent
learners. Particular emphasis is on linguistic skills and,
where applicable, parallels are drawn between the target language
and English.
General language work is 'grounded' and complemented by integrated
studies of lifestyle and civilization and again, where appropriate, thoughtful
cultural comparisons are drawn. Calrossy is able to boast
native speakers of French and Japanese whose primary role
is to promote the productive skills of composition and speaking:
provision of real and simulated situations in which students
can communicate with speakers of the target language is vital
to understanding and enjoyment of LOTE.
In senior years students can enter the exchange program
with study in Japan.
