Years 7-12 Mathematics
Mathematics at Calrossy follows the new Years 7-10 syllabus,
implemented at the beginning of Years 7 and 8. With this new
syllabus comes the acknowledgement that students learn at
different rates and should therefore be allowed to progress
at their own pace. At Calrossy, special emphasis is placed
on improving and consolidating basic arithmetic skills in
junior years in order to provide a solid foundation for subsequent
study. An integral part of the junior Maths program has been
the use of withdrawal of small groups and extra assistance
to ensure that students with difficulties are provided with
the help they need. Students are also able to attend regular
after school help sessions which are provided by various teachers
within the department. Students with a talent in this subject
are also catered for with the use of individual enrichment
and small group "Talented Maths Days" which are
run several times a year. Particular attention is also paid
to increasing the enjoyment aspect of Mathematics with MAD
(Maths Activity Days) becoming a much anticipated event in
the Calrossy calendar.
By the time students reach the beginning of Stage 5, they
are preparing to arrive at three different end points: two
of which lead to senior courses; the third one continuing
to consolidate and apply mathematical skills.
In Stage 6, students who wish to pursue a career involving
the study of Mathematics choose the 2 unit Mathematics course
with the option of Extension 1 in both years and Extension
2 in Year 12 for those with a particular talent or a need
for higher Mathematics.
Students may also opt for the General course which provides
a solid foundation for the more common career choices. In
all courses, students are given not only knowledge, but skills
necessary to pursue tertiary studies or careers of a more
vocational nature.
