Textiles And Design
Students will be given the opportunity to experience first
hand the vast and important role that textiles plays in society.
Through the study of design students are able to see first
hand how designers work with and manipulate textiles to produce
unique items, both wearable and otherwise. Students have access
to skilled tutors and designers via one and two-day workshops
and creative textile camps, locally and in Sydney and Armidale.
Technological and practical skills are developed and enhanced
through the use of textile-related equipment, including computerised
sewing and embroidery machines. The Bernina 180 sewing machine
with its embroidery unit attached can be linked to a computer
program allowing students to scan in a picture, digitise it
and stitch it out. Built-in designs or designs on cards or
CDs can be manipulated to suit student needs.
Students gain a greater understanding of the significance
of different cultures and their specific use of textile materials.
Through the study of a chosen culture they are able to gain
inspiration for their Major Textiles Project. The MTP allows
students to stretch the boundaries to create textile projects
that show creativity and a willingness to expand on ideas,
experiment with a range of materials, processes and techniques.
