Beyond our Classrooms

Co-curriculum

The Co-Curriculum program aims to support the traditional subject-based curriculum by presenting a range of experiences that broaden students' understanding of the world around them.

Performance Elective

Calrossy recognises that students must develop confidence in themselves in the public domain. During one period each week students elect performance based programs such as public speaking, debating, Tournament of the Minds, choir, the annual school drama or musical production, Duke of Edinburgh awards, stock appraisal (cattle, sheep and pigs), physical fitness, sport, coaching and umpiring in hockey, netball, or touch football. and first aid.

Excursions

During one week of each school year all students in Years 7-10 spend one week away from the school and Tamworth. They stay overnight, sometimes camping for four or five days, at places of significance. Excursions have included Barrington Tops; Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, Sydney and Fraser Island.  Calrossy students also attend excursions designed to support their learning in specific subjects.

In addition to the year and subject excursions, Calrossy also offers the opportunity for students to sometimes travel to central Australia and overseas destinations including the United Kingdom, USA, France, New Zealand and Japan.

Career Education

Career education consists of a timetabled course extending over one period each week in Year 10. Students have opportunities to appraise employment trends and job growth areas. The role of Occupational Health and Safety, Workers Compensation and Employee Union groups is reviewed and discussed. Students become familiar with post school education options such as TAFE, industry traineeships, and university education.

The program includes three extended In-Service courses: Choices in Year 10 conducted for students with their parents; Preparation for HSC and Beyond in Year 11, and Tertiary Education in Year 12 conducted for students with their parents, as well as a Careers Forum organised by the P&F, and ongoing support for individual students in Years 11 and 12 provided by the School careers counsellor.

Extracurricular Activities

Students at Calrossy have many opportunities to involve themselves in range of extra-curriculum activities, including Music Groups, Sporting Teams, Public Speaking, Debating and Drama.

Music Groups

Calrossy has developed a proud tradition of music ensembles over many years. Students have the opportunity to join the School orchestra, the jazz band, the string ensemble, the cello choir, the woodwind ensemble and/or the choir.

Individual Music

Strong links with the Tamworth Regional Conservatorium of Music enable the school to provide private tuition in piano, guitar, violin, clarinet, flute, cello and drums on school grounds.
Music enrichment activities are offered throughout the year, including the House Music competition, the Carols Service, and recital evenings.

Sport: Including School-organised and Facilitated Coaching

Calrossy offers an excellent selection of sports and each student is encouraged to be involved. Calrossy caters for beginners to advanced level. The school supports many of the local community sporting associations by entering teams in the local competitions where competition takes place throughout the week outside school hours.

Calrossy is an affiliate member of IGSSA (Independent Girls' School Sporting Association) and participates competitively with other independent girls' schools in swimming, athletics, cross-country, tennis, hockey, netball, triathlon, and touch football. Selection for representation is based on performance at specified carnivals as well as participation in the Calrossy teams at the local level.

Sports currently available include touch football, swimming, waterpolo, basketball, tennis, cross country, athletics, netball, soccer, hockey, softball.  Other teams mayl be formed, and competitions entered as time and interest level allows.

Each year Calrossy holds Inter House competitions in swimming and athletics.  Coaching for a number of sports such as tennis, swimming and athletics is also offered by the school.  A number of talented Calrossy students are awarded places at the Northern Inland Academy Of Sport (NIAS) where they have opportunities to further develop their skills.  The school does not have a formal equestrian program, however, for students interested in horse riding and/or competition, the school is happy to organise independent coaching and event preparation opportunities.

Public Speaking and Debating

Calrossy Anglican School secondary girls are challenged to participate and compete in an extensive range of speaking activities.  Competitions include Mock Trials, Model United Nations, as well as local, state and national debating and public speaking opportunities.  These experiences provide students with opportunities to gain confidence and competencies needed by active citizens in the 21st century.

Annual School Drama Production

Each year, students in Years 9-10 are involved in the annual school drama or musical production.  Directed by staff, students are involved in all aspects of the production from acting to advertising and “front of house”, lighting and sound, set design and stage management.

Lifesaving

This is compulsory for students in Years 7 and 8 where it also includes a ‘learn to swim competently’ program.  In Years 8-12 students can follow through the sequence of Royal Lifesaving Society awards.  Calrossy Anglican School holds the distinction of having one of the highest percentages of students among the schools in NSW who successfully undertake award programs.

Overseas Exchange

Calrossy Anglican School has an overseas exchange program for students in Years 11 and 12. Students can attend schools in the United Kingdom, and Canada.  Some students arrange short term stays at the completion of their Preliminary HSC course. These three month visits are designed to help students develop their foreign language skills.  Other students arrange to spend a gap year between completing their HSC and continuing their education. These students may elect to enrol as a senior in an overseas school or, they are employed as aides in a boarding school in return for free accommodation and meals.
