As part of the Term 2 Visual Arts program, Calrossy’s Year 7 students explored the concept of identity through a major assessment in the unit ‘Me, Myself and I’ . Designed to build both technical skill and personal insight, the unit invited students to consider how we represent ourselves through art.
The task was divided into two parts: theory and practice. In the classroom, students examined the expressive style of Vincent van Gogh. Using the Frames—Subjective, Structural, Cultural, and Postmodern—they learnt to interpret how artists communicate meaning through emotion, technique, context, and reinterpretation. This framework provided students with the tools to think critically about the messages behind artworks.
In the practical component, students created a series of self-portraits using pencil, oil pastel, and watercolour. Each stage of the task allowed them to refine their observational drawing skills and experiment with tone, proportion, and media techniques. From initial sketches to finished paintings, the works reflect both technical progress and thoughtful engagement with the theme of identity.
This assessment encouraged students not only to grow artistically but also to reflect on their own sense of self—highlighting the role of Visual Arts in personal and creative development. The final collection showcases the many faces, styles, and stories of Year 7.
