Calrossy’s Year 9 students recently returned from a meaningful five-day expedition to Sydney—an experience that invited them to step outside their usual environment, strengthen friendships, and engage with culture, history and community in a hands-on way.

The journey began with the Manly to Spit Bridge walk, where students had the chance to take in Sydney’s coastal beauty while easing into the week and enjoying time outdoors together.

Day Two offered a deep dive into the city’s culture and history. After travelling by ferry to Circular Quay, students took part in a Dreamtime Walking Tour, gaining powerful insight into First Nations perspectives. They visited the Sydney Eye Tower for a panoramic view of the city, shared lunch at Hyde Park, and explored the Opera House precinct. That evening, the girls’ group enjoyed dinner at Betty’s Burgers before settling in for a screening of How to Train Your Dragon at IMAX.

The third day opened with a guided tour of Q Station at Manly, highlighting stories of Australia’s quarantine past. In the afternoon, students visited Taronga Zoo to encounter native wildlife and reflect on conservation themes. That evening, they gathered to watch the State of Origin, sparking plenty of healthy debate and team spirit.

On the final day, the group travelled into the city for a visit to Wesley Mission, where they participated in the $5 Homeless Challenge—a humbling and thought-provoking exercise that encouraged gratitude and social awareness. The students then completed a Goosechase scavenger hunt around Circular Quay. That evening, the boys enjoyed their own movie and dinner outing, mirroring the girls' earlier experience.

The Sydney Expedition formed part of the Calrossy 7–9 program’s broader goal: to support students in growing not just academically, but socially, emotionally and spiritually. Through shared experiences and personal reflection, the students came away with more than just memories—they returned with a stronger sense of resilience, empathy and connection.
