Alumni Spotlight - Mitch Watts from Tamworth to Super Rugby

Mitch Watts, a proud graduate of Calrossy Anglican School Class of 2020, has carved an impressive path from regional New South Wales to the professional rugby stage. Now a key player for the Western Force in the Super Rugby Pacific competition, Mitch's journey is a testament to dedication, resilience, and the pursuit of excellence both on and off the field.

Mitch's rugby journey commenced in Tamworth, where he honed his skills at the junior level and playing grade rugby with the Tamworth Rugby Union Sporting Club. His time at Calrossy Anglican School played a pivotal role in shaping his athletic and academic pursuits.

"Mitch's drive to improve and succeed was evident from the outset, as he consistently challenged himself to reach higher standards in his academic work and sporting performance. On the rugby field, Mitch was not only a dedicated and skilled player, but also a natural leader, setting a positive example for his teammates and the younger years through his discipline, teamwork, and willingness to share his knowledge during training sessions. In the classroom, he approached his studies with the same focus and resilience, earning the respect of his peers and teachers alike. "  says Conrad Starr Head Rugby Coach and PDHPE Teacher at Calrossy Anglican School.

Balancing rigorous academic commitments with a burgeoning rugby career, Mitch exemplifies the student-athlete ideal. He completed a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of New South Wales in 2024 and is currently completed a Graduate Certificate in Property Development at the University of Technology Sydney.

After showcasing his talent with Randwick in the Shute Shield, Mitch's prowess on the field caught the attention of national selectors. He represented Australia playing with the Junior Wallabies at the Oceania Championships in 2022, further solidifying his reputation as a formidable lock/blindside flanker. His dedication and performance led to his elevation from the Fortescue Academy to a full contract with the Western Force ahead of the 2025 season.

Mitch's journey from Tamworth to the professional rugby arena serves as an inspiration to current Calrossy students. His story underscores the importance of perseverance, continuous learning, and the pursuit of one's passions.

"Attending Calrossy taught me many lessons that have been invaluable throughout my rugby career, academic endeavours and life."
