Calrossy Alumni Champion Mental Health

Since 2014, the White Elephant Ball has raised over $580,000 for batyr - funding preventative mental health programs in schools across Tamworth and the surrounding region. The unique school program, batyr@school helps break down stigma around mental illness and encourages young people to seek support—critical work, with suicide remaining the leading cause of death for Australians aged 15 to 44.

This year marks a special milestone, with Calrossy alumni Sophia Berlyn (Class of 2015) and Edwina Carrigan (Class of 2018) joining the 2025 Ball Committee. Their leadership reflects the enduring connections between Calrossy graduates and their commitment to driving positive change in the community.

“Our alumni are doing great things both locally and globally,” said Michael Wilson, Calrossy Development Coordinator.

“They’re strengthening community ties, championing mental health, and building a legacy of care for future generations.”

The Ball represents more than a fundraiser—it’s a growing collaboration between Calrossy, its alumni, and local organisations. All funds raised stay within the region, supporting programs that empower young people through open conversations about mental health.

“I first heard of batyr while I was a student at Calrossy, attending one of their programs,” said Edwina Carrigan, now Co-Chair of the White Elephant Ball.

“To be leading this initiative today feels like coming full circle. It’s an honour to give back to the cause that once supported me, and to do so with Calrossy behind me makes it even more meaningful.”

“It’s a privilege to help raise funds and awareness for mental health in regional communities — and I’m especially proud to have Calrossy standing behind this important mission.”

As preparations for the 2025 White Elephant Ball gain momentum, the Calrossy community is encouraged to come together — not just to raise funds, but to lift one another and help shape a healthier, more connected future.
