The Junior School Garden Club has celebrated a colourful and bountiful year, bringing learning to life through hands-on experiences and student-led growth — both in the garden and in character.

Beginning with a bumper summer crop of tomatoes, students delighted in every step of the gardening journey — planting, watering and harvesting bright red and yellow varieties. Alongside the tomatoes, five large watermelons became a Garden Club highlight, with lucky winners drawn from a veggie prize pool and a special class-wide tasting shared by Kindergarten during fruit break.

Calrossy’s youngest green thumbs also had success with their flower garden, growing show-stopping dahlias in brilliant reds, whites and oranges. Members proudly took bouquets home to share with their families.

The zinnias, meanwhile, brought more than beauty — they attracted butterflies, bees and ladybugs, offering a chance for students to harvest seeds and learn about sustainability, with plans to replant in spring.

Their efforts were recognised in a big way earlier this year at the 2025 Tamworth Show, where Garden Club students were awarded:

  • First Place in the Cornucopia section
  • Second Place for their squash, edible herb flower arrangements and zinnias
  • Third place for their vine vegetable entry

These wins are not only a celebration of hard work but also a wonderful opportunity for students to engage with the wider Tamworth community.

With winter upon us, Garden Club members are now tending to snow peas, sugar snap peas, spinach, radishes and carrots. Their spring bulbs — planted the year before — have returned beautifully, brightening the garden with daffodils and jonquils.

Garden Club continues to be a joyful, inclusive space where every grade is welcome. The students’ enthusiasm is matched by the encouragement of staff and families, many of whom share how produce from the garden ends up in school lunches and family dinners.
