Calrossy Anglican School has hit a high note at the 2025 City of Tamworth Eisteddfod, wrapping up its most successful campaign to date with an impressive sweep of performances and placings – and a sea of red and blue uniforms lighting up the stage.

More than 100 students from Year 1 to Year 12 proudly represented Calrossy across a record number of sections, performing 24 pieces spanning genres from swing, blues and pop, to Australian, Latin, hymn and film music.

“This year’s Eisteddfod results are a testament to our whole school music program, which fosters not just skill and performance, but a deep love of music across every stage of learning,” said Director of Music, Mrs Naomi Turner.

“What our students achieved is extraordinary – not just the results, but the musicality, commitment, and courage shown on stage.”

Calrossy ensembles were required to perform two contrasting pieces in many sections, with a strong emphasis on musical understanding, creativity and ensemble cohesion – some coming together for the very first time on stage.

Standout Results:

  • Infants Choir – 2nd place with ‘Little Bonsai Tree’ (Katherine Rhule), a remarkable two-part harmony by our youngest performers.
  • Stage 2 Band – 2nd place with ‘Bandroom Boogie’, the only class group playing pitched orchestral music – performed flawlessly.
  • Stage 3 Band – 2nd place with ‘High Adventure’, played together for the first time on stage.
  • Stage 4 Band – 1st place with ‘Spinning Wheel’ – a standout combined performance from Year 7 and 8 advanced students.
  • Stage 5 Band – 1st place with ‘Gimme Some Lovin’ – rewritten for Year 10 instruments and featuring show-stopping solos from Sid Cooper (drums) and Isaac Zechel (guitar).
  • Primary Concert Band – 1st place performing Chorale No. 1 and Kung Fu – energetic, polished, and full of flair.
  • Rock Band – 2nd place with Red Hot Chili Peppers’ ‘Can’t Stop’ and Santana’s ‘Smooth’ – starring Jake Brand singing and playing bass simultaneously.
  • Orchestra – 3rd place with ‘Gaudeamus Igitur’ and ‘Bella’s Lullaby’ – a sensitive performance despite missing key Year 9 musicians.
  • Jazz Band – 1st place with ‘Skyfall’ and ‘Kansas City’ – praised by the adjudicator as sounding like a professional stage band!
  • HSC Year 11 & 12 Performances – performed all day Friday, receiving glowing adjudicator feedback.

In addition, more than 40 Calrossy students from Junior School to Year 12 competed in solo and small group sections across the week, many taking out their divisions.

“Our success isn’t a matter of luck or a quick few rehearsals,” explained Mrs Turner.

“It’s the result of five months of careful planning, purposeful repertoire selection, and consistent rehearsal tailored to students’ abilities, instruments, and ensemble dynamics. Every beat and every note matters – and our students absolutely delivered.”

This achievement is all the more remarkable considering Calrossy was without its large contingent of talented Year 9 musicians, showing the depth and strength of the program.

Mrs Turner also paid tribute to her colleagues: “Amanda, Lachie, Elly, Alwyn, Hannah and Paige have dedicated countless hours, often before and after school, to support our musicians. Their expertise and encouragement helped guide every student to success.”

Calrossy hopes to showcase many of these pieces in upcoming assemblies to share the talent and hard work with the wider school community.
