Creating Space for Play, Quiet, and Connection at Lunchtime

At the end of last week, we visited Calrossy’s Junior School on the William Cowper Campus during lunch. It was a great opportunity to observe students in their own space, enjoying a well-earned break in the middle of the day.

Across the oval, students from all year levels were engaged in a variety of games—running, playing ball sports, and simply enjoying being active. The play equipment and sandpit were also in full swing, with plenty of movement, imagination and collaboration on display.

Near Pod 3, we noticed some of our Year 6 students sitting and chatting with younger peers. These quiet, thoughtful moments stood out—showing the informal leadership and care that naturally develops across year levels.

In one of the garden beds, we were delighted to stumble across a collection of painted ladybug rocks. Whether left from a past art project or hidden as a surprise, they sparked curiosity and conversation—an unexpected touch of creativity and wonder in the playground.

Inside the library, we stepped into a calm and focused space. We saw children reading, sketching, writing stories and enjoying some quiet time. The variety of activities reflected the way our learning spaces support different personalities and needs—whether for stillness, creativity or connection.

These simple lunchtime moments gave us a valuable window into life in the Junior School—active, social and grounded in care—with plenty of room for curiosity and connection.
