Opening Doors: Big Opportunities for Young Minds at Calrossy

One of the most enjoyable moments in our Junior School is when students step beyond the classroom and into activities they’ve chosen for themselves — because they’re curious, passionate, or eager to try something new. While we take great pride in delivering a strong foundation in the fundamentals, we also believe a great education nurtures the whole child. A day at school should be about sparking curiosity, finding answers, having fun, performing, exploring and creating new interests. That’s why our co-curricular program at Calrossy Junior School is so vibrant — from Prep to Year 6, there’s something for every age, stage and avenue of interest.

At Calrossy Junior School, the fun often starts before the school bell. From morning rehearsals to lunchtime meetups and after-school adventures, our co-curricular clubs provide a dynamic, enriching environment where students can explore their passions — all without parents having to play taxi.

Whether it’s singing in harmony, digging in the garden, coding with curiosity, or dancing with purpose, our Junior School students are finding joy and developing real-world skills through a wide array of engaging activities.

“Co-curricular clubs are a wonderful way to foster holistic learning. They support student wellbeing, build friendships, and encourage young people to become well-rounded individuals ready for a world of opportunity,” explains Mrs Lesley Lamb, Head of Junior School.

From Prep to Year 6, there's a pathway for every passion:

  • Budding musicians can join Infants or Primary Choir or audition for our Primary Band, building performance confidence and teamwork as they prepare for events like the Tamworth Eisteddfod, Musicals, Anzac Day services and Performing Arts Evenings.
  • Dancers light up the mornings with jazz, lyrical and contemporary routines, themed around kindness and expression.
  • Garden Club gets hands dirty and hearts happy, encouraging patience, resilience, and a connection to nature.
  • Tech-savvy thinkers in Minecraft Club tackle challenges together, building digital literacy and problem-solving skills in a safe, supervised environment.

“It fosters creativity and critical thinking while being fun,” says Year 6 teacher Sophie Knight of the Minecraft Club.

Naomi Turner, our Director of Music, adds, “From joyful singing to challenging band pieces, music is a powerful outlet for expression and learning. Our students are motivated, inspired, and thriving — all within the school grounds.”

Other popular options this term include Light Club, Enviro Club, Puzzle Club, Dance, Scratch Coding, Keyring Club and Drawing Club, as well as leadership and fundraising opportunities with the SRC and Library prefects and a robust sports program. Alongside these diverse pathways of fun and exploration there is also an after-school assistance program staffed by the Junior School Teachers providing students help with homework, classwork and assessments.

And for families? It’s all part of the school experience — built into the school day or close to it. No extra driving. No extra scheduling. Just genuine, guided growth.

At Calrossy, we believe a happy, active mind is an inspired one. Our vibrant co-curricular program is not just about keeping busy — it’s about igniting purpose, encouraging discovery, and shaping confident learners ready to take on the world.

The co-curricular opportunities don't end there, with Calrossy launching the innovative XP Program this year for students in Year 5 to 9.
