This week, Stage 3 students showcased their growing skills in critical thinking, public speaking and respectful discussion during the final round of the House Debating competition, with the hot topic:
“That there should only be a four-day school week.”
Following two exciting preliminary rounds, this grand final saw Sheean House argue in favour of the motion, making a compelling case for student and teacher wellbeing, reduced burnout, more family time and the environmental benefits of one less day on campus. Their performance was engaging and polished, anchored by the crowd-pleasing catchphrase:
“Less stress, more success – four days is the best!”

Nicholls House, taking the negative, delivered a confident, well-structured rebuttal. Their arguments highlighted the loss of 240 hours of learning per year, the added financial pressure on families, and the long-term academic implications of a shortened week.
Their use of clever arguments and persuasive delivery earned them a narrow win in a very tight contest.
It was a fantastic finish to what has been a lively and thoughtful series of debates. Students brought energy, preparation and teamwork to every round, making it a highlight of the Stage 3 calendar.
A huge congratulations to all involved—and to Nicholls House for taking out the debating title! We look forward to seeing these young voices continue to grow and thrive.
