Five weeks can pass quickly.
But at Calrossy, those weeks can also hold a remarkable amount of activity — swimming carnivals, expeditions, a leadership induction, commissioning service, assemblies, boarding life, staff gatherings and countless conversations that shape the beginning of a year.
For our new Principal, Mr Mark Lewis, the first month has been both full and formative.
“Coming to Calrossy has been a rewarding and engaging experience, where I have been met with a warm welcome from an amazing community,” Mr Lewis said.
From the very beginning, the year has unfolded with energy.
Year 7 students set the tone early, embarking on their Expedition with fresh-faced enthusiasm — building friendships, resilience and confidence as they began their secondary journey together. For Mr Lewis, it was an ideal way to dive headfirst into Calrossy life, sharing the experience and meeting students in those first defining moments.
“Visiting the Year 7 Expedition gave me the opportunity to see firsthand how these experiences foster a genuine sense of belonging within the cohort,” he reflected.
Across the campuses, House spirit has been on full display at the Primary, Secondary Girls’ and Boys’ Swimming Carnivals — colour, camaraderie and competition combining in true Calrossy fashion.
“House spirit was on full display, with parents and students supporting their Houses and demonstrating courage, character and enthusiasm,” the new Principal said.
Harmonies filled the air at the Bravissimo Music Showcase, celebrating both talent and courage. Badges were proudly presented at the Leadership Induction Assembly. Staff gathered to plan, reflect and set direction. And in Bishop Peter Chiswell Hall, the community came together for Mr Lewis’ Commissioning Service — a moment marking both welcome and responsibility.
In between events, it has been the everyday moments that have stood out: classroom visits, playground conversations, boarding life and assembly addresses.
“As I walk around the campuses, I have been encouraged by the warmth of the welcome from everyone — from our Junior School students to multi-generational Calrossians,” he said.
The boarding community, in particular, has offered a window into the heart of the school — young people living and learning together, supported by staff who care deeply about both wellbeing and growth.
“Leigh and I found our first Boarders’ Chapel and muster to be a special moment, a reminder of the diverse journeys that bring our boarders here,” Mr Lewis shared.
As Calrossy steps into its Year of Service, Mr Lewis said he has already seen service lived out in practical and powerful ways — through student leadership, staff dedication and the quiet acts of kindness that shape daily life.
“Seeing students live out service in practical ways is deeply encouraging — from cheering each other on in sport to stepping up to help those in need,” he added.
And then there’s Tamworth. The late-summer heat has certainly made its presence known, but so too has the warmth of the community. From early morning greetings at the gate to conversations at school events and around town, Mr Lewis said he has been struck by the genuine welcome extended to him and his wife, Leigh.
The pace of regional life, balanced with the energy of a thriving school and cultural centre, has offered both contrast and comfort — reinforcing why Calrossy’s place in Tamworth is such a strength.
Five weeks in, there is gratitude. There is momentum. And there is deep optimism.
“As we await the survey results, I am filled with optimism about partnering with our community to continue strengthening what we do and pursuing excellence together,” Mr Lewis said.
As the term continues to unfold, one thing is clear: this is a school with heart — and a Principal who is already listening, learning and leading alongside its community.
