As the much-anticipated Red vs Blue Alumni Rugby Weekend approaches, excitement is at an all-time high.
With team captains ready to lead their squads, the atmosphere is buzzing with anticipation for the annual showdown at Scully Park on Saturday, 5th October 2024.
Blue Team Co-Captain Angus Hanlon, from the class of 2010, is especially eager to return to the field.
“When you run out onto Scully Park in front of a huge crowd of friends and family, and you know most of the faces in the crowd, there is no better experience,” he shared, capturing the deep sense of community that surrounds this event.
His co-captain, Jack Kotris (2012), echoed this sentiment, saying, “It’s a privilege to be back and to co-captain alongside Angus. The Red vs Blue games have evolved so much, and seeing what it’s turned into now makes it very exciting for the future. I’m really looking forward to catching up with everyone again for the celebrations.”
On the Girls' side, Blue Team Captain Jessie Middlemiss (2017) is thrilled to be back after missing last year due to injury. “It’s such an honour to be back and lead the team. As an alumna of Calrossy, I feel a strong connection to this school and the community that’s always supported us,” she said. For Jessie, stepping onto the field is not just about the game, but also about “reconnecting and having a go, which is something we have all learnt from our time at Calrossy.”
The Red Team is equally fired up, with new captain Mitch Salter (2014), fresh off his season with the University of Newcastle Seahorses, ready to lead his squad to victory. “I’ve been handed the reins from Michael Handley (2011), and I’ve got clear instructions that the Red Team needs to go back-to-back to cement our place in the record books,” Mitch said. Confident in his team’s chances, Mitch added, “With a big engine room in the forwards and the fastest backline on the field, I am confident we will get the job done.”
Leading the Girls' Red Team, Sylvia Lim (2002), reflected on the special bond between Calrossy alumni and the school. “Calrossy has always been a place that fosters both individual and team growth, and it’s amazing to see that support continue well after we’ve left. I’m excited to take the field again, knowing the school is behind us, and to be part of a day that brings the entire community together,” she said.
