Yesterday afternoon, Calrossy Senior Secondary hosted Dr Julia Day from the University of New England, who addressed Year 10 students on the imminent ban on social media use for those under the age of 16.
Dr. Day’s engaging presentation took students through the history and rapid rise of social media, how it is used today, and the balance of benefits and drawbacks it brings. Topics included:
- The intersection of law and online platforms
- Privacy implications of age verification software
- The permanence of digital footprints
- Education potential of social media, particularly Youtube
- The reasoning behind the legislation and its rollout in early December
Students were encouraged to participate throughout the talk, with Dr. Day fielding numerous questions and fostering meaningful discussion about personal responsibility and safe online practices.
At Calrossy, we are committed to helping students find a healthy balance in their use of technology. With initiatives such as Yondr pouches for Secondary students, our policies encourage meaningful face-to-face connection and focus during the school day. This session reinforced these goals, equipping our young people to make wise, informed choices about their digital lives - both inside and outside the classroom.
