This morning was filled with emotion, laughter and joyful reunions as 34 students from Calrossy’s 2025 Year 12 cohort returned to the William Cowper Campus for a special Junior School assembly—celebrating their journey from Prep to their final term of schooling.

The assembly began with a warm welcome from Mrs Lesley Lamb, Head of Junior School, who reflected on the year these students were born—when the first iPhone was released, Shrek was topping box office charts, and High School Musical had taken over. She commended the group for surviving 12 years of homework and assessments, encouraging them to remember that what makes you special is who you’ve grown into, and who you are yet to become.

Principal Mr David Smith followed with a heartfelt address, noting that 18 of the students began in Prep and 28 started in Kindergarten. He read out some of their funniest memories and childhood dreams from their Year 6 booklet, adding a lovely mix of nostalgia and humour to the morning. To illustrate just how far they’ve come, Mr Smith invited two current Kindergarten students to stand beside two of the returning Year 12s—offering a powerful, visual reminder of the journey from early learning to confident young adulthood.

Former Head of Junior School Mrs Claire Smith—who is currently on maternity leave—was also present with her twin daughters. Claire shared her own reflections, including a particularly memorable visit to the art gallery with a group of 12 boys that turned into the fastest tour on record (though they did manage to see all the “good stuff”). She also fondly recalled starting the now much-loved tradition of Captains’ Lunches with this very group, who she said received the “royal treatment” during their time.

The assembly continued with a series of touching and funny memories shared by many of the students’ past teachers:

  • From the big weekend adventures recounted by Mrs Kim Bargwanna in Kindergarten show-and-tell to the iconic Very Hungry Caterpillar costumes from Mrs Linda Wilson's Year 1 class, which made a special return for Book Week last year.
  • Mrs Lyn Hoy (Year 2) wrote a heartfelt letter, sharing that she was just as nervous to meet the class as they were to meet her. She encouraged students to reflect, grow, and follow their passions.
  • A nod to then-Head of Primary, Mr Robert Black, who once called this the best year group he’d ever taught.
  • Mrs Beth Dalitz recalled her “Do Not Lose It” folder (famously lost by Henry) and the moment Ella couldn’t stop laughing during a very serious lunchtime investigation. Then-Head of Primary, Mr Black was already seeing red about the situation, which only made Ella’s giggles harder to contain!
  • Mrs Patrice McMullen’s video of photos from Year 4 moved many to tears. This was her first full-time teaching class after a break, and she recounted memorable moments including Shrek The Musical , the Lake Keepit excursion, and a twin class swap with Shelby and Lillian that had to be quietly reversed.
  • Mrs Rachael Roberts took everyone on excursion to Bathurst in Year 4 to learn about the Gold Rush, Costa from Gardening Australia visited the school to judge a scarecrow competition which was won by 'Miss Moppett', and Cailey’s plant (gifted to Mrs Roberts with a special task attached) survived all the way to graduation.
  • Mr Phil Garland returned to campus to share reflections on each student from his Year 5 class—highlighting moments like Jamie being hard to spot in the pool thanks to his bleach-blonde hair, debating brilliance from Albert, and a memorable talent night featuring Jayden's jokes. His closing advice: “Say yes. Make mistakes and be ok with it. Try something new—and don’t be a stranger.”
  • Year 6 teacher Mrs Sarah Hopkins wrapped up with memories of bell-ringing, the “Life on Mars” project, hand sewing, cross-stitching, and the birth of Calrossy’s now-traditional bucket drumming.

Each returning student was then presented with a certificate, a copy of their original Kindergarten or Prep class photo, and an individual photo from their first year at Calrossy—either Prep or Kindergarten depending on when they started. These keepsakes offered a special reminder of their early days and the lasting connection they have with their school.

This morning was more than a walk down memory lane. It was a celebration of growth, resilience, and the lifelong connections made at Calrossy. As this cohort prepares to graduate and step into the world beyond school, the foundation built in Junior School—and the people who shaped it—remains a treasured part of their story.
