Clippers, Courage and Community: World's Greatest Shave

Colour flew, clippers buzzed and courage took centre stage today as Calrossy students came together for the 2026 World’s Greatest Shave, raising more than $43,000, with counting still continuing, for Australians impacted by blood cancer.

Held at the William Cowper Campus, the annual event once again proved why it has become a much-loved Calrossy tradition for the graduating class. Our Year 12 students led the charge, rallying the entire school community in a powerful display of leadership, service and heart.

In the weeks leading up to today, students hosted silent auctions to build momentum. This morning’s event featured a spirited live auction of members of the School’s student leadership team, along with the auctioning of several brave teachers who volunteered to have their heads shaved — and others who agreed to endure a two-minute ice bath — all in the name of a great cause.

The haircuts were bold, bright and wonderfully creative, with colourful mohawks, vibrant dyes and clean shaves drawing cheers from the crowd. But beyond the fun and flair was a deep sense of purpose.

School Captain Bridie Yeo said the overwhelming support from across the School had been inspiring.

“The World’s Greatest Shave has become such an important tradition for our graduating class. Seeing students from Prep right through to Year 12 get involved — whether shaving, donating or simply showing up in crazy hair — has been incredible. It shows how much our community cares about making a difference.”

SRC Representative Ella Tanna echoed that sentiment.

“The support has honestly been overwhelming. Every gold coin donation, every bid in the auctions and every word of encouragement adds up. We’re proud to be part of something bigger than ourselves and to stand alongside those facing blood cancer, as I have personally been impacted by cancer it is beautiful to see the wider community get involved.’

The event was largely organised by the Senior SRC, with Ella Tanna and Stevie-Josephine Wilson-McKellar. The entire School embraced the day, with students from Prep to Year 12 arriving in crazy hair and contributing a gold coin donation to the cause. The sense of unity was unmistakable — a vibrant sea of colour and compassion.

Importantly, students also ensured the impact would be felt close to home. Alongside fundraising for the national cause, they sold and personalised encouragement cards, which will be hand delivered to local community members currently undergoing treatment at the Tamworth Cancer Clinic. Thoughtful, handwritten postcards filled with hope and strength will soon make their way into the hands of local cancer warriors — a tangible reminder that they are not alone.

A special thanks to Jaye McHugh from Design Hair Studio for providing some much needed assistance and improvements to the students hair after the shave.
