Calrossy’s Year 9 students had the opportunity this week to step into the world of a First World War soldier, thanks to an immersive incursion presented by Shane Blackman from WW1 Living History .
Held in the Auditorium of the Dr. Ted Giblin OAM Centre, the session offered students a hands-on exploration of life in the trenches between 1916 and 1918. With nearly 100 original and replica artefacts on display, students were able to examine and handle items including trench tools, weapons, personal kits, gas protection gear, food rations, uniforms and communication equipment.
Through engaging commentary and practical demonstrations, Shane unpacked the daily experiences of Australian soldiers on the Western Front. His knowledge, combined with a down-to-earth delivery and moments of humour, created an engaging learning environment that captured the attention of students from beginning to end.
The session complemented their classroom study of World War I and provided a chance to explore the human stories behind the conflict. It also encouraged students to think critically about the challenges faced by those who served.
We thank Shane and WW1 Living History for providing such a memorable and well-informed learning experience.
