A group of Calrossy Year 11 boys recently had the opportunity to explore one of the largest heavy machinery maintenance facilities in Australia — WesTrac’s Tomago site, which also serves as the company’s NSW headquarters.

The visit offered students valuable exposure to real-world operations within the heavy machinery and trade sector. Beginning with a detailed site induction, the boys were taken on a behind-the-scenes tour of the expansive facility. They were able to observe day-to-day operations, meet industry professionals, and gain a greater understanding of the skills, safety standards and mindset required in such a dynamic workplace.

As an authorised Caterpillar dealership, WesTrac provides a comprehensive range of machinery, parts, services and integrated technology solutions across construction, mining, and other heavy industries. This gave students a unique opportunity to see not only the workshop and maintenance operations, but also the scale of service delivery and customer support involved in such a high-performing business.

This experience formed part of Calrossy’s broader focus on future planning and careers education — supporting students to make informed decisions about their next steps after school. For those considering trade and apprenticeship pathways, the day provided direct insight into what a future with a leading industry employer like WesTrac could look like.

The students represented Calrossy with maturity, curiosity and respect throughout the visit, embracing the early start and the challenges of a professional site setting. Their conduct was a reflection of their growing independence and readiness to explore life beyond the classroom.
