Our Year 2 students recently enjoyed a fun-filled and informative Bike Safety Day at the William Cowper Campus, designed to build confidence, capability, and awareness while cycling.

The morning began with an engaging theory session, where students learned from a variety of special guests—including fellow Calrossy students and local experts—on how to stay safe, look after their bikes, and protect their bodies and brains while riding.
The theory segment opened with Year 9 student Ben Shaw and Year 8 student Lucas McDonald, who shared practical tips on bike maintenance, helping our younger students understand the importance of looking after their gear.
Next, Calrossy parents Katherine Chan and Rebekah Lockart from the New England Brain Injury Rehabilitation Service (NEBIRS) gave an insightful talk about how the brain works and why wearing a helmet is so important for brain safety.
NSW paramedic and Calrossy parent Derek Baker followed with a hands-on session on what to do if you're hurt, reinforcing calm, sensible actions and personal safety in emergencies.
To conclude the session, Calrossy parent and Oxley Police District representative Troy Gross spoke to students about road rules, helmet laws, and the need for visibility on bikes and scooters. His message was clear: safety is everyone’s responsibility.

After recess, the excitement rolled into a practical session in the carpark, where students applied what they’d learned.
Guided by Year 2 teachers, enthusiastic parent helpers, Mr Conrad Starr, and a team of dedicated Year 9 PDHPE students, the young cyclists took part in a bike course that tested their newly acquired skills. They practised hand signals to indicate turning, controlled stopping, and safely dismounting to walk across pedestrian crossings.
The atmosphere was one of encouragement and joyful learning as students pedalled with growing confidence and care.
Bike Safety Day brought together students, parents, staff, and members of the wider community to support Year 2 students in developing practical safety knowledge and skills. The day reflected Calrossy’s ongoing focus on wellbeing and safety education as part of students’ broader development.
