As the Christmas season approaches, Calrossy’s boarding students are demonstrating their commitment to community through active involvement in a number of charitable initiatives across Tamworth. These efforts reflect the School’s strong focus on service, compassion and Christian values, as students give their time and energy to support those doing it tough during the festive season.

Last week, representatives from the Salvation Army visited Calrossy’s Brisbane Street Campus to collect a generous donation of hand-wrapped Christmas gifts, prepared by the boarding community. The presents were thoughtfully selected, purchased and wrapped by students and staff, and will be distributed to families and individuals across the Tamworth region who are experiencing hardship this Christmas.

The visit provided an opportunity for students to connect directly with those coordinating local support efforts, and to see how their contributions will help make a difference in the lives of others. This annual tradition encourages students to reflect on the needs of their wider community and reinforces Calrossy’s focus on purposeful service.

Throughout 2025, many Calrossy boarders have participated in the Hillvue Breakfast Club , a weekly service program that has become a valued part of boarding life. Every Wednesday morning, students travel to Hillvue Public School to help prepare and serve breakfast to local primary-aged children, many of whom arrive at school without having eaten.

This regular involvement not only provides practical support to families in the Tamworth community but also gives boarding students a chance to build relationships, practice service, and develop a broader understanding of the role they can play in the lives of others.

In the lead-up to Christmas, students have also helped prepare a number of hampers for families connected to the program. These have now been packed with food staples, festive treats and essential supplies, and will be delivered in the final week of term—bringing some extra support and cheer to local households at this time of year.

Calrossy boarders recently completed their involvement in the national Share the Dignity – It’s in the Bag campaign, which supports women and girls facing homelessness, domestic violence, or financial hardship.

Thirty bags were packed with essential personal care items such as shampoo, deodorant, sanitary products, toothbrushes and more—many donated by boarding families and staff, with others purchased using funds raised by students. Each bag also included a handwritten Christmas card from a boarding student, adding a personal and thoughtful touch.

The bags have now been delivered to a local collection point, ready to be distributed to women in need across the region in time for Christmas. The campaign reflects Calrossy’s values in action, particularly Selflessness and Inclusiveness, and provided students with a meaningful way to serve others with dignity and care.

These initiatives are not just about giving; they are also about learning. Students are encouraged to think beyond themselves, develop empathy, and work collaboratively to make a positive impact—skills and qualities that will serve them well long after they leave school.

Opportunities like these help students to understand the value of kindness, consistency and community connection, reinforcing the importance of contributing to the world around them.
