Calrossy students from Years 5–6, Year 8 and Years 9–10 recently took part in the Science and Engineering Challenge, a nationwide STEM outreach program presented by the University of Newcastle and held at TRECC.

Bringing together schools from across the region, the Challenge provides students with meaningful, hands-on experiences designed to inspire curiosity, creativity and a passion for problem-solving—key attributes we seek to nurture in our students as they grow as learners and contributors to the world around them.

Discovery Days spark future pathways

Our Years 5–6 students attended the Discovery Days, part of a national program delivered across every state and territory in Australia. Through a series of engaging and practical activities, the program aims to inspire more young people to make a difference in the world by pursuing careers in science and engineering.

Students embraced a variety of challenges, including:

- Designing and constructing bridges

- Building eco-friendly houses tested for strength and wind resistance

- Creating fan blades to harness wind energy

- Exploring ways to provide low-cost electricity to a city

The bridge building challenge was a standout favourite, with students enthusiastically testing and refining their designs. Their creativity, collaboration and determination were on full display—clear signs that we may have some future engineers in the making.

Challenge Days extend learning for Secondary students

Students from Year 8 and Years 9–10 took part in the more advanced Challenge Days, where teamwork and critical thinking were essential.

Across a series of complex tasks, students were challenged to:

- Code and transmit secret messages using coloured lights and fibre optic technology

- Design systems using 3D printed materials to solve practical problems

- Build and test model gliders

- Create mechanical grabbers assessed on their effectiveness and functionality

Calrossy students achieved excellent results in a highly competitive field:

Year 8 team – 1st place and named Champion School

Year 9 and 10 team – 4th place overall

Supporting student growth beyond the classroom

These results are a testament not only to students’ academic abilities, but also to their teamwork, problem-solving skills and willingness to embrace new challenges.

Opportunities like the Science and Engineering Challenge are an important part of the Calrossy journey, providing authentic learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom and connect students with real-world applications.

We extend our sincere thanks to the staff who organised and accompanied our students across the program. Their commitment ensures our students continue to access opportunities that inspire learning, growth and future pathways.
