Calrossy Anglican School congratulates Year 12 Visual Arts student Annabelle Sayad , whose evocative body of work Dikhrana d‑Nana (Memory of Grandmother) has been officially nominated for inclusion in ARTEXPRESS — a celebration of the most outstanding Visual Arts major works from across New South Wales.
In a recent article by Kristin Murdoch for the New England Times , Annabelle shared the inspiration behind her work: a deeply personal tribute to her late grandmother, Edna Sayad. The full article can be read here .
Drawing from Memory
Originally conceived before her grandmother’s passing, Annabelle’s concept transformed after Edna died during the HSC year. The work became a poignant memorial — a way of honouring her grandmother’s legacy and Assyrian heritage.
The five-piece series is crafted entirely in coloured pencil, although many viewers assume it includes collage. Each piece features a central portrait of Edna, surrounded by symbolic elements from her home — vases, wallpaper, handwritten notes, and other personal artefacts. Annabelle explained to the Times that these details were chosen to “honour her and tell her story visually”.
“It’s all just coloured pencil,” Annabelle said. “People think it’s collage, but it’s not. It’s all drawn.”

Nomination for ARTEXPRESS is a significant achievement, recognising Annabelle’s technical skill, storytelling and emotional depth. Her work is now under consideration for public exhibition as part of the prestigious annual program, which celebrates exemplary Visual Arts HSC works.
Looking Ahead
As Annabelle completes her Year 12 journey, she is considering university options and possibly a gap year. We are incredibly proud of her achievements and the recognition of her talent on such a respected platform.
From all of us at Calrossy, congratulations Annabelle — your work is a moving testament to memory, culture and creative courage.
