The Junior School has officially launched its Curby soft plastics recycling program , thanks to the initiative and leadership of students in the Enviro Club.
The program focuses on collecting sausage roll wrappers, a common source of waste from Wednesday hot lunches, to prevent them from ending up in landfill. It’s a small but meaningful step toward building more sustainable habits across the campus.
Ahead of the launch, Enviro Club members met with Mrs Whitton to finalise their lunchtime plan. Armed with Curby buckets and a clear goal, students worked in pairs during the break, moving around the playground to speak with peers and encourage them to dispose of their wrappers responsibly.
After eating time, the group reconvened with Mrs Whitton to reflect on how the collection went. In a thoughtful discussion, each student shared feedback on what worked well and suggested ways to improve the process. Ideas included clearer signage, regular reminders, and increasing the number of Curby collection points in high-use areas.
The program’s launch follows an earlier letter from the Enviro Club to Mrs Lesley Lamb, Head of Junior School, requesting funding to purchase Curby bins and cover the ongoing costs of the program. The proposal was well received, and today’s rollout marks the first step in putting the plan into action.
Looking ahead, the students are now preparing to write to the local council, asking for support with the cost of Curby recycling bags. Their aim is to build stronger partnerships beyond the school and highlight the role young people can play in addressing local environmental issues.
The Curby program will continue to grow across the Junior School, with students taking the lead not only in collection but also in education and awareness.
