There are some nights that stay with you.
The kind where the air hums with anticipation, every word matters, and the applause feels just a little louder. The Federation Cup Debating Finals was one of those moments — a chance to see students step forward, take a position and be heard.
A Season of Strong Thinking and Bold Speaking
Facing off against The Armidale School, Carinya Christian School, McCarthy Catholic College and Farrer, Calrossy students approached each round with confidence and clarity. Across all stages, they engaged thoughtfully with complex issues, demonstrating both strong reasoning and respect for differing perspectives.
Each round focused on challenging topics:
Stage 4: That we should ban hate speech
Stage 5: That governments should not ban protests
Stage 6: The government should not restrict freedom of speech

The competition structure required different approaches. The Round 5 debates were prepared in advance, giving teams time to develop and refine their arguments. In contrast, the final round was impromptu, with students given one hour to prepare a case, either for or against the topic. This tested their ability to think quickly, collaborate effectively and respond under pressure.
Strong Results Across All Stages
Calrossy achieved excellent results on the night:
Stage 4 Winners: Kate Frazer, Lucinda Crockett, Klara Bunnemeyer and Heidi Hawkins
Stage 5 Winners: Ava Harding, Oliver Scott, Joshua Suter and Joey Mathew
Stage 6 Playoff Winners: Amelie Chambers, Shanzay Zubair, Charlotte Clunies-Ross and Lauren Sharkey
These results reflect the efforts of all students involved throughout the competition:
Stage 4 Debaters: Indie Powell, Kate Frazer, Lucinda Crockett, Klara Bunnemeyer, Heidi Hawkins, William Yeo, Jack Brown, Polly Smith, Polly Schultz, Hannah Nicolle
Stage 5 Debaters: Ava Harding, Lauren Sharkey, Ruby Cook, Scarlett Schultz, Mia Scott, Oliver Scott, Joshua Suter, Joey Mathew
Stage 6 Debaters: Amelie Chambers, Shanzay Zubair, Charlotte Clunies-Ross, Ava Harding, Joshua Suter, Hudson Clunas, Lauren Sharkey
When Calrossy was announced as the champion school, the response in the Ted Giblin Auditorium reflected the pride and excitement of the students and the wider school community.

A Team Effort
Thank you to Mrs Heywood (Head of English), Mrs Rixon and Mrs Rankmore for their organisation of the event and their support of students throughout the competition.
We also acknowledge the students who assisted on the night by ushering, timekeeping and supporting their peers, as well as the staff and parents who attended and encouraged students across each round. The support in the Ted Giblin Auditorium on the night was a clear reflection of the strength of the Calrossy community.
Moments like these reflect the opportunities students have to develop confidence, think critically and engage with the world around them.
