Tamworth will come alive with colour, culture, and community spirit on Saturday, May 3, as Calrossy Anglican School proudly partners with the Tamworth Rugby Union Sporting Club for a very special Indigenous Rugby Round.
This much-anticipated event is a celebration of the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players to the game we love — and a reflection of the respect, appreciation and pride shared by Tamworth Rugby Union Sporting Club and school communities.
The Indigenous Round was born just three years ago, driven by Magpies First Grade player Liam Allan, who dreamed of creating a game that would honour the cultures woven into the fabric of Tamworth Rugby. With the full support of Club President and former educator Chris Shaw, that dream became a reality.
“We just want to show these boys and girls that we respect them, appreciate them, and value their culture,” Mr Shaw said.
Each year, the Magpies have a special Indigenous jersey designed for the round, and in 2025, the celebration is even bigger with Calrossy joining as a proud event partner. As a School grounded in Christian values and committed to inclusiveness, it is an ideal partnership that highlights shared values of respect, connection, and community.
The day will feature:
Rugby matches throughout the day, spotlighting Indigenous players
A special Welcome to Country and cultural recognition activities
Light refreshments for all guests
A welcome space hosted by Calrossy staff and student leaders
Opportunities to connect with Calrossy's Indigenous Program and broader School life.
This year’s clash between the Magpies and the Barbarians Rugby Club is the perfect backdrop for a day that will showcase not just the strength of rugby in the New England region, but the strength that comes from working together across cultures.
Michael Wilson, Calrossy's School Development and Promotions Coordinator, said,
"Community partnerships are valued deeply at Calrossy Anglican School. Across the School we are fortunate to have connections that benefit the learning outcomes of our students and provide opportunities for our community to engage."
The connection between Calrossy and Tamworth Rugby Union Sporting Club is longstanding. What began with boarders assisting with field marking has evolved into a significant partnership involving the Calrossy Parents and Friends Association (P&F). Each season, more than 20 volunteers support the Club through field preparation, canteen operations, and helping build community spirit.
Longtime P&F Treasurer Jocelyn Goodfellow described the partnership as something truly special:
“This partnership is unique and allows our P&F to be a part of the community. We are fortunate to have so many amazing people who are willing to give the gift of time that allows us to continue to support the students of the School.”
Calrossy invites all Indigenous families, students, Old Scholars, staff and the broader community to join us for a day of rugby, recognition and connection.
