Fresh produce, flowers and plenty of excitement filled Kiss and Drop at the William Cowper Campus last week as Calrossy Year 7 Agriculture students hosted their very own pop-up Farmers Market.
The market was the culmination of a term of hands-on learning in the garden, with students selling produce they had grown themselves as part of their Agriculture studies. Customers enjoyed browsing stalls filled with fresh radish, turnip, lettuce, silverbeet, herbs and other seasonal vegetables, along with flowers, seedlings and plants cultivated by the students.
The experience gave students the opportunity to see the full journey from paddock to plate, developing practical agricultural knowledge alongside important life skills such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving and customer service.
In the lead-up to the market, students worked during class time to harvest, wash and package their produce ready for sale. For many, it was their first experience preparing fresh vegetables for market, and they quickly discovered the challenges involved in harvesting produce correctly and packaging it carefully to help maintain freshness and longevity.

Despite the challenges, students embraced the task with enthusiasm and resilience, learning valuable lessons through hands-on experience. The market atmosphere created a wonderful sense of community, with staff, families and students stopping by during Kiss and Drop to support the young growers and purchase fresh produce.
Experiences such as these reflect the authentic and practical learning opportunities available within Agriculture at Calrossy, where students are encouraged to apply their classroom learning in meaningful, real-world contexts.
All students involved are to be congratulated on their efforts and the success of the market. Following the positive response from the Calrossy community, the Year 7 Farmers Market will return next semester.
