Year 7 Visual Arts students have been developing their artistic skills and exploring their own identity through their current unit, Me, Myself and I .
As part of the unit, students have been creating self-portraits using oil pastels, learning a range of techniques that help transform a simple drawing into a realistic and expressive artwork. Throughout the process, they have explored how to effectively blend colours, build layers and create depth, while discovering that sometimes less is more when working with this versatile medium.

A key focus of the unit has been understanding the planes of the face and how artists use tone to create the illusion of form. Students have carefully observed their own facial features, applying highlights, mid-tones and shadows to create natural light sources and realistic dimension within their portraits.
The project has challenged students to develop both their technical skills and their observational abilities. By experimenting with colour combinations and refining their blending techniques, they have gained a deeper understanding of how artists create lifelike representations of their subjects.
With some portraits now complete and many capturing an impressive likeness of their artists, the results reflect the dedication, creativity and growing confidence of our Year 7 students. Each artwork is unique, showcasing not only technical achievement but also the individuality of the student behind it.
The Me, Myself and I unit continues to encourage students to see themselves as artists while developing the foundational skills that will support their future studies in Visual Arts.
