First Nations at Calrossy
Culture, Connection, Belonging and Opportunity
Our Indigenous Education Program supports students from Prep to Year 12, including day and boarding students, through strong relationships, personalised learning, cultural connection and meaningful partnerships with families and community.
We recognise that every student's story, culture, strengths and aspirations are unique. Our approach places relationships at the centre, helping students build a strong sense of belonging while developing the confidence, skills and pathways to pursue their goals beyond school.
Individual support
Shaped around the needs and aspirations of each student and can include:
- Mentoring and relationships – building trusted mentoring relationships with students and supporting established relationships to continue throughout their schooling.
- Personal Learning Plans and Pathways – developing and regularly reviewing individual plans from Prep to Year 12, helping students, families and teachers work together towards personal, academic and future goals.
- Academic support – helping students identify areas where additional assistance would be valuable and connecting them with appropriate support.
- Boarding support – helping Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander boarding students feel supported, connected and welcome in their home-away-from-home.
- Extra-curricular support – providing opportunities through mentoring, health and fitness activities, academic assistance and broader school experiences.
- Wellbeing support – working alongside Calrossy's wellbeing team, incorporating trauma-informed practices and individualised student care.
A culturally safe space is also available to students on our William Cowper Campus, providing a place for connection and support within the school environment.
Indigenous Perspectives in Learning
Indigenous education is not limited to individual programs or events.
We support our teachers to meaningfully incorporate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and perspectives into everyday teaching and learning.
Through professional development, On Country experiences and connections with local community, our staff continue to build their cultural knowledge and confidence, supporting a learning environment in which First Nations students feel recognised, respected and valued.
Connecting with Culture and Country
Connection to Country, culture, community and identity is an important part of our approach to Indigenous education.
Calrossy provides opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to learn from local Elders, knowledge holders and community members through cultural experiences both within and beyond the classroom.
Our annual Cultural Immersion Days provide First Nations students with opportunities to learn On Country, strengthen cultural connections and share experiences with their peers.
We also provide On Country experiences for staff and students, supporting greater understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and perspectives and helping build cultural safety across the wider Calrossy community.
Community Partnerships
Strong community relationships are an important part of supporting our students and families.
Calrossy continues to develop connections and programs supported by the Local Aboriginal Land Council and Gomeroi Education and Training, creating opportunities for students to connect with local community, culture, mentors and pathways.
Families and community members are encouraged to engage with the School and participate in cultural events and experiences throughout the year.
Calrossy is also involved in the Waratah Project through Independent Schools NSW (AISNSW), providing ongoing support, resources and professional development to strengthen Indigenous education and cultural safety across our School.
Indigenous Boarding at Calrossy
As a regional boarding school in Tamworth, Calrossy welcomes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from communities across regional and remote Australia.
Our Indigenous Education team works alongside Boarding staff, teachers, wellbeing staff, students and families to help boarding students establish a strong sense of belonging.
We recognise that moving away from family and community is significant. Our focus is on ensuring students feel welcomed, supported and connected while having access to academic assistance, mentoring, wellbeing support, cultural opportunities and the broader experiences available through school life.
Indigenous Scholarships
Calrossy is committed to creating opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to access a Calrossy education.
The School continues to review and develop its Indigenous Scholarship Program, including opportunities for students entering our Boarding School.
Scholarship availability and eligibility may change from year to year. Families interested in future Indigenous scholarship opportunities are encouraged to contact our Enrolments team to discuss current opportunities, eligibility and the application process.

Discover Indigenous Education at Calrossy
Supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students is a partnership between the student, family, School and community.
From a student's first days at Calrossy through to their transition beyond Year 12, our goal is to provide the relationships, cultural connection, academic support and opportunities they need to develop their own pathway.
