Students across Calrossy joined millions of children around Australia on Wednesday 27 May to celebrate National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS), sharing in a nationwide event that highlighted the importance of reading, storytelling and connection.
Organised by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), National Simultaneous Storytime is one of Australia's largest literacy initiatives. Now in its 26th year, the event brought together schools, libraries, childcare centres and community groups from across the country, with more than 2.2 million participants taking part from over 16,600 locations last year.
This year's featured book, Luna Roo: The Kangaroo Baller , was selected from 84 submissions. Written by Adam Wallace and Adrian Beck and illustrated by James Hart, the story followed spirited kangaroo Luna and her friends as they chased their football dreams across the Australian outback. Filled with action, teamwork and humour, the story captivated young readers while encouraging perseverance, friendship and self-belief.
Students gathered to enjoy the shared reading experience, joining children nationwide as the story was read simultaneously at noon. The event provided an opportunity to celebrate not only a wonderful Australian story, but also the many benefits that reading brings to children's learning, imagination and wellbeing.
National Simultaneous Storytime was established to promote literacy and encourage recreational reading at a time when literacy rates continue to be a national focus. Research consistently highlights the positive impact that reading for enjoyment can have on language development, comprehension, creativity and empathy.
A special thank you to our Principal, Mark Lewis, Head of Senior Secondary, Julia Boland, Director of Studies, Matthew Frazer, Head of Junior School, Lesley Lamb, and our Junior School Captains, who generously volunteered their time to read to students throughout the event.
At Calrossy, fostering a love of learning and reading remains an important part of helping students grow with confidence, curiosity and purpose. Events such as National Simultaneous Storytime remind us that stories have the power to inspire, connect communities and spark lifelong learning.
