It is with sadness that we share the passing of Miss Phyllis Pearson, a much-loved and influential member of the Calrossy community, who passed away on 21 April 2026, aged 103.
Miss Pearson joined Calrossy in 1952 as a member of the Music Department, beginning what would become a remarkable and enduring contribution to the life of the School. Her passion for music and dedication to her students helped shape a thriving and respected music program that enriched generations of young people.
During her time at Calrossy, Miss Pearson led and inspired countless students through choirs, musical productions, examinations, orchestral groups, recording sessions, church services and the much-loved Carols. A highlight of her early years was in 1960, when the School Choir won the 2TM Shield at the Tamworth Eisteddfod for the first time — a testament to her leadership and commitment.
Following a period in England from 1954 to 1956, Miss Pearson returned to Calrossy and continued to build the strength and reputation of the School’s music program. As noted in Calrossy 1919–1994: A Vision Unfolding , her contribution to the development of music in the School “cannot be overestimated,” with the standard of music reaching exceptional levels during her tenure. The recording of Calrossy Sings in St John’s Church in 1972 remains one such highlight.
Miss Pearson retired at the end of 1983 as Head Music Teacher. In recognition of her outstanding service, the music room on the Brisbane Street Campus was named in her honour, and her legacy continues through the annual Phyllis Pearson Senior Music Award, presented each year at the Secondary Presentation Day.
Following her retirement, Miss Pearson made her home in Nambucca Heads, where she remained an active and valued member of the local community. In recognition of her significant contribution to choir, church life and service to the community, she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM). She was the eldest of five children and, in a life spanning more than a century, outlived them all.
Her impact on Calrossy extended far beyond the classroom. She is remembered for her dedication, excellence, and the deep love of music she instilled in her students — a legacy that continues to resonate throughout our community today.
Miss Pearson is survived by her nine nieces and nephews and extended family.
Her funeral service will be held on Saturday 16 May at 11:00am at St John’s Anglican Church, Nambucca Heads , and will be live-streamed.
We extend our sincere condolences to her family and to all members of our community who were touched by her life and work.
