Calrossy Hosts First Regional Beyond These Walls Hybrid Workshop

Student leaders from Years 9 to 12 at Calrossy Anglican School recently participated in Anglicare’s Beyond These Walls simulation workshop as part of the organisation’s Take Love youth initiative — an immersive experience designed to help young people better understand poverty in Australia and discover practical ways to serve their communities.

Significantly, Calrossy was the first regional school outside of the Sydney area to host the hybrid version of the program, allowing regional students in Tamworth to engage with a powerful learning opportunity usually delivered in metropolitan centres.

The workshop invited student leaders into a “choose your own adventure” style experience where they followed the stories of three characters based on real Anglicare clients. Through a series of decisions and challenges, students experienced the complexities and pressures faced by vulnerable Australians navigating housing insecurity, financial hardship and social disadvantage.

Rather than simply presenting statistics, the simulation encouraged students to immerse themselves in the stories and circumstances of others — using both critical thinking and empathy to understand the true nature of poverty in Australia.

Students were challenged not only to learn with their heads, but to allow the experience to transform their hearts.

The workshop aligned strongly with Calrossy’s Christian foundation and the School’s focus on service, compassion and purposeful living. It also connected with the School’s Year of Service emphasis, encouraging student leaders to think deeply about how they can support and serve vulnerable people within their own communities.

Through guided discussion and reflection, students explored practical ways they can respond to the needs around them — whether through advocacy, volunteering, generosity or everyday acts of kindness and inclusion.

Calrossy values opportunities that encourage students to grow not only academically, but also in character, compassion and understanding. Experiences such as Beyond These Walls help students develop empathy, resilience and awareness while equipping them to become thoughtful contributors to the world around them.

As a School committed to developing graduates who are “Creators of hope and change that matters”, the workshop provided an important reminder that meaningful change often begins with understanding the experiences of others and choosing to respond with compassion and action.
