Year 1 students have been developing their swimming skills and confidence in the water this term as part of Calrossy’s Junior School swimming program at 360 Fitness Club.

The program follows Year 2 students, who completed their swimming sessions last term, providing our younger students with valuable opportunities to strengthen their skills in a safe, supportive and encouraging environment.

During each session, classes are divided into two groups based on students’ swimming ability and confidence. While both groups work on similar foundations, activities are adapted to ensure students are learning at an appropriate level and can continue progressing at their own pace.

For some students, the focus has been on becoming comfortable and confident in the pool. Supported by instructors and equipment such as pool noodles, students have practised swimming the length of the pool, learning how to float and working on kicking while on their backs.

As their confidence has grown, students have also been encouraged to develop greater independence in the water through a range of activities and games. Diving beneath the surface to retrieve weighted rings has provided a fun way to practise submerging, movement and confidence underwater while becoming increasingly comfortable without additional support.

More experienced swimmers have been refining their freestyle technique, initially using kickboards to focus on body position, kicking and breathing. From there, students have progressed to swimming without additional aids, putting the different elements of their stroke together and practising turning their heads to breathe correctly to the side.

This gradual progression has allowed students to build their skills step by step, moving from supported activities towards swimming more independently under the guidance of their instructors.

The swimming program also complements PDHPE learning across the Junior School, giving students the opportunity to put important movement, safety and personal development skills into practice beyond the classroom. Through their time in the pool, students are developing not only swimming technique, but also confidence, independence and an understanding of how to participate safely in aquatic environments.

With plenty of encouragement, practice and persistence, our Year 1 students have continued to make great progress throughout the program, building skills and greater independence that they can carry with them well beyond the pool.
