There was no letting the weather dampen the excitement at Calrossy Junior School as grandparents and special guests joined us for our annual Grandparents Day celebration last week!
One of the most anticipated occasions on our Junior School calendar, Grandparents Day is a wonderful opportunity to bring generations together, celebrate family connections and share a glimpse into the vibrant learning experiences of our students.
The highlight of the day was a fantastic assembly filled with music, dance, poetry and plenty of entertainment, as students from Prep through to Year 6 took to the stage to perform for their very special audience.
Our youngest performers kicked off the celebrations in style, with Prep bringing plenty of smiles to the audience through their enthusiastic performance of Peter Combe's Mr Clickety Cane. Kindergarten kept the energy going with a lively rendition of Home Among the Gum Trees, complete with actions that had everyone entertained.
Year 1 added a clever modern twist with their performance of Grandparents Are Grand, a song created with the help of artificial intelligence! Having explored how technology has changed over time in the classroom, students put today's technology to the test, developing lyrics using ChatGPT and generating the music and vocals through SongGenerator.io. It was a creative way to combine their learning with a special tribute to their grandparents.
Year 2 continued the entertainment with their performance of Poor Mouse, before Year 3 brought rhythm and coordination to the stage with an impressive body percussion routine to a traditional New Zealand sea shanty. Led by Mrs Elly Davies, the performance showcased the students' ability to create music through movement and teamwork.
There was plenty of nostalgia when Year 4 took the audience on a trip down memory lane, dancing their way through a collection of hits from years gone by. Their throwback performance brought a fun change of pace to the assembly and was a wonderful nod to the music enjoyed across generations.
Year 5 took a heartfelt approach, sharing sensory poems inspired by their grandparents. Through the prompts 'I see', 'I hear', 'I smell', 'I taste' and 'I touch', students captured the special memories, familiar moments and meaningful connections they share with their loved ones. The audience enjoyed individual poems, alongside a choral speech poem written by our students.
Year 6 turned up the volume with their energetic bucket drumming performance of The Storm by Oliver Cutz. Combining rhythm, coordination and teamwork, our senior Junior School students delivered an exciting performance that showcased their hard work and musical skills.
Adding even more variety to the assembly were our talented Junior School music ensembles. The Junior School Orchestra entertained with Cops and Robbers by Adrian Hallam, while the Junior School Choir shared a beautiful rendition of Where the Sky Meets the Sea by Rachel Kelly. Our Junior Strings Sinfonia also took to the stage with Shark Attack by Kathy and David Blackwell, demonstrating the wonderful musical talent developing across our Junior School.
Our Stage 3 dancers added another highlight to the program, returning to the stage to reprise their Eisteddfod routine from earlier in the year. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to share their performance once again, this time with their grandparents and special guests cheering them on.
From the enthusiasm of our youngest performers to the confidence and creativity of our older students, the assembly was a wonderful showcase of the talents, dedication and joy of learning across Calrossy Junior School.
Grandparents and special friends also had the opportunity to visit a pop-up book stall in the hall, where they could purchase a book to donate to the Junior School Library in honour of their grandchild or special student. Each book will include a personalised dedication sticker inside the cover, with the nominated student having the special privilege of being the first to borrow it from the library. A wonderful way to contribute to our growing library collection while leaving a lasting reminder of their visit to Calrossy.
Despite the less-than-ideal weather, the excitement of the occasion was evident throughout the day, with proud grandparents, smiling students and plenty of special moments shared across generations.
A sincere thank you to our Junior School teachers, music staff and everyone involved in preparing the performances and coordinating the celebrations. Most importantly, thank you to all the grandparents and special guests who joined us and helped make Grandparents Day such a memorable occasion.
Relive the celebrations! Photos from Grandparents Day are continuing to be added to our Hub gallery, so families are encouraged to check back regularly for updates or visit their child's profile on the Calrossy Hub to view photos as they become available.
