This year's Year 9 Expedition took the girls and boys on separate journeys across South East Queensland, each following a carefully planned itinerary filled with adventure, learning and personal growth. Despite travelling different paths, both groups shared experiences that encouraged teamwork, resilience and discovery beyond the classroom.
The expedition began with an early morning departure and ferry journey from Brisbane to Tangalooma Island Resort on Moreton Island. Surrounded by crystal-clear waters and expansive sand dunes, students immersed themselves in the island's unique natural environment. From racing down towering dunes while sandboarding to hand-feeding fish at the resort, the experience combined adventure, teamwork and plenty of memorable moments in one of Queensland's most spectacular coastal settings.
Back on the mainland, Brisbane became the backdrop for an action-packed Amazing Race inspired by the popular television series. Working in teams, students navigated the city using maps and cryptic clues to locate checkpoints, complete challenges and overcome surprise sabotage missions, creative photo tasks and locked challenges. The activity encouraged problem-solving, resilience and communication while providing a fun and engaging way to discover the city.
Students then explored Brisbane from a different perspective during a guided Urban Tours walking experience. Led by a knowledgeable local guide, the tour wove together the city's rich history, diverse culture, striking architecture and hidden laneways through engaging storytelling, allowing students to see familiar landmarks in an entirely new light.
One of the expedition's most impactful experiences came through participation in the Salvation Army's Homelessness Workshop. Using current data, personal stories and meaningful discussion, the workshop explored both the structural and individual causes of homelessness. Students were encouraged to challenge common misconceptions, develop empathy and gain a greater appreciation of the complex circumstances that can lead to homelessness, reinforcing the importance of compassion and community support.
The expedition also included an evening at the Australian Outback Spectacular on the Gold Coast. Before taking their seats for the acclaimed Heartland production, students joined in the pre-show country dancing, creating a lively atmosphere before experiencing a performance celebrating the resilience, spirit and stories of rural Australia through horsemanship, music and spectacular visual effects.
The Year 9 Expedition was about far more than the destinations visited. It was an opportunity for students to step outside their comfort zones, build confidence, strengthen connections with their peers and engage with experiences that challenged both their thinking and their perspectives. Through adventure, collaboration and reflection, students returned home with lasting memories, new skills and a greater appreciation for the opportunities that exist beyond the classroom.
