Our Year 10 Agriculture students recently stepped beyond the classroom to explore the latest developments in agricultural technology and broadacre cropping research during an industry-focused excursion.
Students began their day at a Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) Farms of the Future Field Day, held at 'The Park' in Piallaway, a property owned and operated by the family of Calrossy Year 11 student Sidney Cooper.
The field day showcased a range of innovative technologies transforming modern farming practices, including Halter virtual fencing for livestock and pasture management, Optiweigh in-paddock livestock weighing systems, and FarmBot remote monitoring technology for water management and farm security.
Students had the opportunity to engage directly with industry professionals, hearing firsthand how these technologies are being implemented on farms to improve efficiency, productivity and sustainable land management.
Following the field day, students visited the Breeza Research Station, where research agronomists and the farm manager shared insights into broadacre cropping trials and plant breeding research.
Students explored how crop varieties are assessed for disease resistance, yield, quality and resilience to environmental conditions. They also gained an understanding of experimental design and the practical considerations involved in conducting agricultural research.

The excursion provided valuable connections between classroom learning and real-world agricultural practices, reinforcing key concepts from the Year 10 Agriculture curriculum while highlighting the growing role of technology and research in the industry.
Thank you to Farms of the Future, DPIRD and the industry professionals who generously shared their knowledge and expertise, helping provide our students with these valuable learning opportunities.
