From livestock genetics and sustainable production to meat science and nutrition, our Year 11 Agriculture students recently gained a behind-the-scenes look at the research shaping Australia's red meat industry during a visit to the University of New England (UNE).
Participating in a Red Meat Industry Research and Development (R&D) Immersion Tour, students spent the day alongside UNE lecturers and researchers, discovering how scientific advancements are helping address some of the challenges and opportunities facing modern livestock production.
The experience introduced students to a range of research areas, including animal growth and development, livestock genetics, meat quality and the role of nutrition in reducing methane emissions from cattle and sheep.

At UNE's Kirby Research Station, students learned about ongoing sheep feedlot trials, feed intake monitoring and the use of feed additives to improve livestock production and environmental outcomes. A visit to the UNE SMART Farm also provided a closer look at how research findings and emerging technologies are being applied in agricultural settings.
One of the day's more hands-on experiences involved exploring the science behind meat quality, with students putting their learning into practice by preparing and tasting their own burgers.

The immersion tour offered a valuable extension of the Stage 6 Agriculture curriculum, allowing students to connect concepts studied in the classroom with the research being undertaken by industry specialists.
Importantly, the visit also highlighted the diverse opportunities available beyond school, introducing students to potential career pathways in agricultural science, research, livestock production and related industries.
Calrossy extends its thanks to the University of New England, particularly Dr Peter McGilchrist, for providing such an engaging and informative experience. We also acknowledge our Agriculture faculty and supporting staff for their continued commitment to creating meaningful learning opportunities for our students.
